New Colour Schemes Announced for BBMF Lancaster

BBMF Lancaster PA474 will re-emerge from its winter overhaul in two different colour schemes.

OC BBMF, Sqn Ldr Andrew Millikin, has announced that the starboard side of the bomber will wear the markings of 50 Squadron's VN-T representing the Lancaster flown by his grandfather, Flying Officer Douglas Millikin DFC, on 27 of his first tour of 30 operations.

The port side will carry the markings of 460 (RAAF) Squadron's W5005 / AR-L.  Its nose art features a kangaroo playing bagpipes to recognise the Australian and Scottish heritage of its crew.

Thumper's Last Landing

PA474 DXDave Whitworth 05OCT16.jpgThe BBMF's Lancaster, PA474, flew south from Coningsby to Duxford on October 6 to begin a major service which is scheduled to take at least six months.
The work is being carried out by the Aircraft Restoration Company at Duxford before the aircraft returns to the skies next spring.
The ferry flight to Duxford took place several days before planned but
OC BBMF, Sqn Ldr Millikin, explained: "The weather and wind conditions needed to land at Duxford are quite exacting.  The following week's weather forecast was not conducive to a landing at Duxford and since we did not want to delay the flight – as this would affect the date it returns - we sent her down early.
"It was sad to watch her recede into the distance but we look forward to see her in 2017"
When the Lancaster returns to BBMF she will be carrying a new paint scheme and markings to tell the story of another gallant aircraft and crew.

Thank you to all our Members!

BBMF Formation.jpgThank you to all our supporters who attended our annual Members' Day on Sunday October 2nd.

We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!

The glorious weather definitely helped but the fact that we had not one but two displays from the BBMF Lancaster certainly made it an afternoon to remember!

We know that many of you travelled considerable distances to join us and it was especially nice to welcome those who had crossed the North Sea to be with us.

Thank you for your continuing support!

PA474 will be back next year in a new colour scheme which has yet to be announced.

Lincolnshire's Lancaster Association – Members' Day 2016

Although all tickets for our annual Members' Day event on October 2nd were allocated by mid-June, we are still receiving new applications to attend.

Could we ask any LLA members who have already received their tickets, but now know they are unable to attend on October 2nd, to return them to LLA so that we can re-allocate them to fellow members whose names are on our waiting list.

Thank you for your help.

'Lost Medals' Bomber Command Veteran Dies

Donald Nicholson, the former Bomber Command flight engineer who hit the headlines after losing his wartime medals, has died aged 93.  Donald initially thought he had lost his medals on the way to the unveiling of the Bomber Command Memorial in Lincoln last October.  The former Warrant Officer, who completed 31 bombing operations, was subsequently reunited with his medals after they were handed in at a police station near his home in Tyne and Wear.

Donald's photo appeared in the Autumn 2015 edition of our Memorial Flight journal and the committee of Lincolnshire's Lancaster Association sends its sincere condolences to his family.
